The Gasgoyne
This region of the central coast of Western Australia is most famous for Monkey Mia. A Dolphin extravaganza where you can swim, play and interact with the dolphins and see them in there natural habitat. If you wish to meet the dolphins, there are a variety of tours available from Denham, or alternatively if you are staying in Perth day trips by light aircraft are available. The area is known as Shark Bay and is a world heritage listed area. It has a range of accommodation ranging from Backpackers to 4 and 5 star hotels and resorts.
The Gasgoyne region is a fantastic spot for the water sports enthusiasts. Sportfishing in the bay is available for those who like to catch big fish, with many vessels offering overnight or day trips. Diving is a popular pastime and dive companies take you to the best spots.
Off the coast is the Ningaloo Marine Park and the reef stretches south for 260 kilometres. The reef is home to fantastic coral formations, rare starfish, whale sharks, dolphins and the giant humpback whales just to name a few. In season, turtles head for the sheltered beaches that serve as rookeries.
There are several shipwrecks along the length of the park which are well worth a dive. The western coast of Australia has long been regarded by Australians as some of the best diving in the country and the Queensland Great Barrier Reef does have competition.
In the south of the region is one of the newest towns in Australia, Exmouth. It was founded in 1967 as a support town for a U.S. Naval communication station.
Accommodation is varied and has the usual, a haven for backpackers and those on a budget.
