Margeret River
The Margaret River Region, besides being a wine producing area, is also where you will find some of Australia's best surfing spots. The wild waters of Canal Rocks will test surfers who pit their skills against nature. The popular surf breaks are The Three Bears, Yallingup and Injidup.
The South West Coast is host to many international surfing and diving competitions. This side of the coast is fed by the roaring 40's which travel across from South America and do not touch land till they reach the coast of Western Australia. This is what makes the south west coast so dramatic and produces seas not to be seen anywhere else in Australia.
Something totally different from the coast and the wineries is the caves system that lies beneath the limestone ridge that separates the coast from the hinterland. Here lies one of the worlds most extensive cave systems which extends over 100 kilometres.
The Caves are a highlight and a very popular tourist attraction. Only 4 of the caves are open to the public Caving and climbing are the order of the day at this attraction and guided tours are available. Millions of years have provided perfect conditions for the formation of the caves. The most popular cave is the Jewel cave. This cave is well known for its almost 6 metre long stalactite (one of the longest known ) and it is fascinating to see stalactites hanging over a tranquil lake.
Margaret River is the perfect place to base yourself to see the caves and the area has many guest houses and lodgings catering for every budget.
